Poll Shows Iowa Electorate Opposes Obamacare

Count Iowa seniors among the majority in the state who oppose President Obama’s healthcare reform plan, according to a poll of Iowa voters released August 15. The key accomplishment of the Obama Presidency is not very popular in Iowa, with 56% of Iowa voters opposed to the  plan,

The poll underscored the unpopularity of the health care plan with only 27% of Iowa Independents favoring the plan and 65% opposing it.  Amongst seniors, 52% disapprove and 36% approve.

“Iowa voters are not only dissatisfied with the President’s leadership, but also strongly opposed to his key policy initiative,” said Brian Walsh, President of American Action Network. “This survey shows that the voter opposition to the President’s health care reform legislation remains strong, that voters oppose execution of key elements of the bill, and that the Medicaid-style price controls being proposed by liberals in Congress are deeply unfavorable to Iowa’s seniors.”

When asked specifically about Medicare:

  • 58% of the voters in Iowa believe that “with no major changes, Medicare will go bankrupt.”
  • Iowans were less likely to support Democrat plans for Medicare when provided with new information about how those plans would affect them, with seniors closely matching the overall electorate.
  • 74% of Iowa voters said they would be less likely to support Democratic plans for Medicare when it was revealed that the plan would result in a 40% increase in premiums for seniors on the Medicare Part D prescription drug program.
  • 63% were less likely to support Democratic plans for Medicare when it was disclosed that the Democrats insist on making changes to the Medicare Part D program, despite its success.

Conducted by The Tarrance Group, the poll was commissioned by the American Action Network. For detailed data information on the American Action Network poll, please visit: http://americanactionnetwork.org/american-action-network-iowa.
